Buddha, meaning "awakened one" or "enlightened one," is a title rather than a specific person. It refers to individuals who have attained enlightenment and awakened to the true nature of reality, breaking free from the cycle of birth and death (samsara) and the suffering it entails.

Siddhartha Gautama, commonly known as Gautama Buddha, is the historical figure most commonly associated with the title of Buddha. He lived in ancient India around the 5th century BCE and founded the teachings and philosophy that came to be known as Buddhism.

Gautama Buddha was born into a royal family but renounced his privileged life in search of truth and liberation from suffering. After years of seeking and spiritual practice, he achieved enlightenment at the age of 35 while meditating under a Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India. This event is known as his "awakening" or "enlightenment."
